Superleague Formula by Sonangol’ Revs-up with Spectacular Street Show

The eagerly-anticipated 2009 ‘Superleague Formula by Sonangol’ race series revved up for this weekend’s opening round at Magny-Cours in France with a dazzling display of power and passion on the city streets of near-by Nevers.

Earlier this evening thousands of fans packed the downtown pavements to watch a dramatic demonstration as three V12-engined Superleague Formula race cars roared up and down the Avenue General de Gaulle.
To the obvious delight of the locals, one of the cars wowing the enthusiastic crowds was the new Olympique Lyonnais entry driven by Nelson Panciatici.
The all French rookie team was joined by similar 750bhp race cars representing two of Europe’s other top football clubs: Liverpool FC and PSV Eindhoven driven by Adrian Valles and Dominique Muermans.

The street show was followed by a public autograph session in Place Carnot and then the Drivers’ Draw for qualifying groups at the Palais Ducal.
The draw placed Olympique Lyonnais, Sporting Clube de Portugal, Al-Ain FC, Flamengo, Anderlecht, Atlético de Madrid, Tottenham Hotspurs, Liverpool FC, AS Roma in Group A for tomorrow’s first qualifying session;
the remaining eight clubs (AC Milan, Galatasaray , PSV Eindhoven , Olympiacos, Basel , Corinthians, FC Porto, Glasgow Rangers, FC Midtjylland) into Group B.
The fastest four cars from each group will qualify for the final shoot-out for the top eight starting positions on the grid for the opening race of this year’s Superleague Formula by Sonangol on Sunday morning.

Sonangol becomes Superleague Formula title sponsor for 2009 and 2010 seasons
SF by Sonangol

Superleague Formula enters a significant new era after concluding a two-year partnership with African oil giant Sonangol for title sponsorship of the prestigious race series that combines the very best of international motor sport action with the passion and fervor of world-class club football. The 2009 season kicks-off at Magny-Cours in France this weekend (27/28 June) and will be renamed ‘Superleague Formula by Sonangol’.

Sonangol is a global company responsible for petroleum and natural gas production in Angola. Following Angola’s independence from Portugal in 1975, Sonangol, the state owned company was formed in 1976 with a mandate to manage the country’s substantial oil and natural gas reserves. Despite having the government as the sole shareholder, Sonangol has always been governed as a private company and is under strict performance standards to ensure efficiency and productivity.

“We are delighted to be announcing this new relationship with Sonangol which comes on the eve of the start of our second season and will play a major part in the on-going development and growth of Superleague Formula,” said Alex Andreu, Superleague Formula President. “Sonangol is an ambitious company with global aspirations, so it’s a perfect match for Superleague Formula, which has very similar objectives. Over the next two years we will work closely together to develop both of our brands.”

Since its formation Sonangol has focused its resources on diversifying and expanding its business activities into new markets. Prioritizing the management of hydrocarbons, environmental protection and industrial safety, Sonangol has created a diversified business that is centered around oil. With headquarters in Luanda, Sonangol is proud to be a company with representations in the whole country. Overseas the company has offices in Democratic Congo, Sao Tome e Principe, Cape Vert, USA, England, Singapore and Chine. More than 10 subsidiaries and over 25 joint venture companies are now part of Sonangol Group.

Superleague Formula’s Car shares engine with the recently presented Supersonic Car Bloodhound Project

Both machines fit out the same V12 engine powered by MCT

BLOODHOUND SSC, the land speed record attempt unveiled in London by Richard Noble, will be utilising a Menard Competition Technologies (MCT) – designed V12 engine as an integral part of the propulsion package for the project, alongside a Eurofighter jet engine. The V12 unit will be providing over 27,500 pounds of thrust and delivering a tonne of propellant within 17 seconds to the car’s rocket, whilst also powering the vehicle’s electronic and hydraulic systems. If the car reaches its 1.4 mach, 1,000mph target, the V12 motor will become the fastest piston engine in history.
